James Knock, who lives in the United Kingdom, has been a dedicated collector of Strawn waterlily cultivars for many years and is an expert in their identification and cultivation. Most cultivars were obtained directly from Strawn Water Gardens in the years 1994 through 1998.

In these galleries, James takes us through seasonal and age related changes in coloration of many Strawn cultivars. High summer in England, sometimes only two to three weeks long, provides the most dramatic colors of all, often not seen in other climates. None of the images have been color enhanced or color adjusted.

Nymphaea 'Pink Peony' 1993

Kirk got the name of this exceptional variety spot on - you know exactly what to expect. This hybrid was first introduced to the world in 1993, but sadly it has remained rare in cultivation ever since. I find this rather strange because I consider it to be one of Kirk's very best pinks.

It is very much in the same vein as 'Nigel' but with a completely different flower shape. Blooms are somewhat more rounded with more cup shaped petals. This is particularly evident in new buds and first day flowers. Like 'Nigel' mature plants carry their blooms high above the water bringing a real tropical aire to the pond.

This hybrid grows from a running rootstock (odorata) so a large container 60cm (24") or larger is required to get the best results. It is exceptionally free flowering for an odorata type and reliably out performs the better known varieties. First day flowers are particularly fragrant and can be sensed from some distance away.

One reason for the scarcity of this hybrid maybe the fact that its relatively slow to produce offsets. It is a very fertile plant producing lots of viable seed each year. Therefore great care must be taken not to allow these seedlings to proliferate at the expense of the true plant. It would be a crime for this plant to be lost to cultivation!
