In Memory of Columbia
With Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center in
our "side yard", the space program has always be woven
into our lives and the fleet of shuttles have become like dear
friends. The astronauts who fly them jog on our beach, share
our streets and stores, and many friends are part of the team
that lives the dream with them.
Having personally witnessed the Challenger disaster,
we named the first of our Victoria back-cross hybrids in honor
of the fallen craft and crew. We then named the other hybrids
for members of the fleet, Discovery, Atlantis and Columbia. Perhaps,
as in the Legend of the Victoria Flower, the fallen star Columbia
will live on in moonlit splendor.
