N. 'Mosaique'

In early 2003, a historical researcher found a page in Revue horticole 1900 that provided earliest publication to date for a number of Latour-Marliac's waterlily hybrids and one never before found in the literature, 'Mosaique'. Though it obviously has been lost to cultivation, perhaps even in that year, it is still of enormous interest. A similar cultivar, 'Arc-en-ciel', was introduced the same year and remains in cultivation.

The paragraph in Revue horticole 1900 reads:

N. hybride Mosaique.

Translated to English by Suzanne Cherney

N. hybrid Mosaique - Rounded, heart-shaped leaves. The sinus forms an acute angle, while the "basilar" lobes are sub-acute or obtuse. The upper surface of the leaves when young is mostly burgundy-carmine in color, lighter in the center and purpler towards the lobes, with broken, uneven olive-green splashes. Other leaves may have more green blotches or may even be greenish-yellow with carmine edges. As the leaves become adult, some of them develop pinkish-green or pink zones or speckling on the green part, with a lovely carmine coloring toward the base of the "basilar" lobes. All leaf reverses are solid violet-tinted carmine red. The flowers are salmon-pink, with pink-flamed sepals, and are sweet-smelling.
