James Knock, who lives in the United Kingdom, has been a dedicated collector of Strawn waterlily cultivars for many years and is an expert in their identification and cultivation. Most cultivars were obtained directly from Strawn Water Gardens in the years 1994 through 1998.

In these galleries, James takes us through seasonal and age related changes in coloration of many Strawn cultivars. High summer in England, sometimes only two to three weeks long, provides the most dramatic colors of all, often not seen in other climates. None of the images have been color enhanced or color adjusted.

Nymphaea 'Louise Villemarette' 1993

Mature, first day
This is a lovely very double and highly scented pink, which for some reason seems to have been largely overlooked. The potential size of the plant may have something to do with this. It has quite large leaves with rather long petioles which makes for a wide spread, though this does somewhat prevent the leaves from becoming overcrowded.

As with most lilies the flowers of young plants can be quite pale, but this plant matures quickly to show off its true rich colour. First day flowers only open about three quarters of the way, giving a distinctive look.

This hybrid has a running rhizome (odorata) so needs a large container, ideally 60cm (24") in diameter or larger. It is also not uncommon for young plants to have a much reduced petal count. It is one of the most free flowering odoratas I know.
