Piecing together water gardening's history and its important people and places is a challenge. Thanks to old documents, the Internet and some special people, we are making headway.

One of the special people is John McCormick who teaches history to sixth through eight graders at the Riverton School in Riverton, New Jersey.

"I started the Riverton Project because, when I showed vintage postcard images to my students, they were surprised to find out not only that Riverton had such an industry as Dreer's, but that we had a trolley line, steamship service, and steam rail service.

"For several years, I ran a fund-raiser for the school. As a history teacher, saving the images for posterity was my primary mission. That accomplished, I stopped the fundraising aspect as selling notecards, prints, enlargements, and calendars in three different local stores grew to be a time-consuming part-time job. Though the fundraiser is over, the images are still posted on the school website. I still add more images to the site as I am able.

"Too often these vintage images lay in archives of Historical Societies or the albums of collectors and are seldom seen. My efforts have put many hundreds of reproductions into the hands of people who might not have otherwise seen them."
