James Knock, who lives in the United Kingdom, has been a dedicated collector of Strawn waterlily cultivars for many years and is an expert in their identification and cultivation. Most cultivars were obtained directly from Strawn Water Gardens in the years 1994 through 1998. In these galleries, James takes us through seasonal and age related changes in coloration of many Strawn cultivars. High summer in England, sometimes only two to three weeks long, provides the most dramatic colors of all, often not seen in other climates. None of the images have been color enhanced or color adjusted. |

When it comes to naming lilies, Kirk came up
with some really memorable ones. I love the name 'Patio Joe'.
It seems to roll off the tongue beautifully. The colouring of this plant is virtually impossible to describe. There are so many subtle tones at work. Kirk described it as a cool pink with apricot overtones which I think pretty much sums it up. The first flowers, especially on young plants, can be quite pale and often have a two-tone effect. As they mature and the available sunlight increases, so does the intensity of the colour. Likewise the flower shape evolves from broadly cup shaped to quite stellate. |

By the height of summer the true glory is revealed
as the blooms are pushed higher and higher above the foliage.
I particularly like the fiery orange centre which really makes
the blooms glow, especially when viewed from a distance. In keeping with all of Kirk's peach, apricot and salmon hybrids, this is a very free flowering variety. The overall proportions are also excellent with flowers nearly as large as the leaves. This hybrid is broadly similar to 'Colorado' except the flowers are larger and have more pink tones. Curiously it is somewhat overlooked. |
