James Knock, who lives in the United Kingdom, has been a dedicated collector of Strawn waterlily cultivars for many years and is an expert in their identification and cultivation. Most cultivars were obtained directly from Strawn Water Gardens in the years 1994 through 1998. In these galleries, James takes us through seasonal and age related changes in coloration of many Strawn cultivars. High summer in England, sometimes only two to three weeks long, provides the most dramatic colors of all, often not seen in other climates. None of the images have been color enhanced or color adjusted. |

Fed up with those vivid, in your face water lilies?
Looking for something subtle and sophisticated? Look no further.
It is the perfect name for a perfect plant. This is another wonderful hybrid that simply can't make its mind up what colour to be. With our changeable climate in the U.K., it can be anybody's guess what shade of yellow, pink, apricot or peach each flower is going to open. Generally speaking flowers are pale yellow, but the better the weather the more of the pink and apricot hues shine through. A wonderfully subtle combination of tones is reached only at the very height of summer. Young blooms are quite rounded and sit on the water, but fully mature plants produce much more stellate flowers which stand well above the foliage. By the height of summer, mature plants have a real tropical aire about them. Although my plants come into flower slightly later than Kirk's other peach/apricot varieties they are reliably free flowering late into the season. They can be viviparous, making new plants from the flowers. |
