Euryale is the most closely related genus to Victoria in Nymphaeaceae and has only one species, ferox. Euryale's bright green pads are "quilted" and have thorns on the surface as well as on the royal purple reverse. The day blooming purple flowers usually open under water but on rare occasions open above water.
